Eccleston is my favorite doctor but I am definitely outnumbered there! Most people like Tennant or Tom Baker the best. Russell T. Davies was in charge during the Eccleston and Tennant years. Moffat took over for Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi. Matt Smith wasn't terrible because Davies was still poking his head in during the first season of Smith but by the second season Moffat was going solo and went off the rails with it. Moffat doesn't have the subtlety that Davies had. Moffat's big over arching plot points beat you around the head saying "hey notice me, notice me, I am important." Davies just built a world and then suddenly something happened and you thought "OMG THAT IS WHAT THAT THING 2 SEASONS AGO MEANT!!!!!" Plus Moffat tried to retcon things from the classic series that have been canon for decades. And everyone got really pissed off at him over the 50th anniversary special because he only included Smith & Tennant despite the fact that 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9 are all still alive and wanted to participate. He tossed in 2 seconds of 4 at the very end to placate the fans that were absolutely furious that he didn't even ask the older actors to participate.
Moffat wasn't solo at the beginning of Sherlock. He had Mark Gatiss reining in his wilder instincts but for the last few bits of Sherlock Gatiss was busy with other projects (game of thrones and several broadway shows) and didn't help as much so Moffat crapped all over it.
