It's over, Noah...

Those were the last words she had spoken to him. Short and straight to the point.  No fanfare, no long goodbyes, just a statement of fact and she was gone. And yet...he missed her. He missed the way she tossed her hair when they got into an argument, the way her eyes lit up when he whispered something naughty in her ear, or the way she laughed at one of the many tall tales he loved to relay over the dinner table.  But most of all he just missed her.  Maybe if they could have spent more time alone together, maybe if their jobs hadn't interfered, maybe...if he could just be satisfied with one woman...they could have made it.  Maybe...

"Sir, did you need anything else?" his pretty blonde assistant asked him, breaking into his thoughts as he turned in her direction after a grueling 24 hours.

The same color hair as Karen's...but not Karen...

"No, Lisa, that will be all.  Get some rest," he told her, giving her half a smile.  "I might call you later."

"Of course," she demurred, walking out of the room as he admired her retreating form.  Personnel certainly knew how to pick them.

"You never change," a soft voice murmured behind him as he turned to see his former wife enter the room, arms crossed and a small smile on her lips.

"Karen...," he growled, allowing himself to return the smile as he turned in her direction.  "I thought you would be on the first plane back to L.A."

"L.A. can wait," she replied with a shrug of her shoulders as she leaned against a corner of his desk, unwittingly giving him a generous view of her striking profile and her long legs beneath the no nonsense skirt.  "I thought I would stop by to see how you were holding up."

"Karen, we weren't married that long but I think I know you well enough to say...you're lying," he informed her with a soft growl, standing up to lean against his desk beside her, crossing his arms to mirror her own.

"Are you calling me a liar, Noah?" she asked him in that half playful, half flirtatious tone of voice he loved.

"Let's just say...I know you don't usually make social calls...especially with someone who just challenged your vote during the cabinet meeting earlier today," he replied in a gruff voice, leaning over to see if his bear like presence would have any effect on her.  It didn't.

"I should be angry...I should be furious," she replied back, her eyes full of snap and fire before slowly softening in a way that touched his heart.  "But I'm not...and I don't know why."

"I know why," he told her softly, leaning toward her once more but this time in a protective, endearing manner.  "No matter what happens, Karen, understand that I will always care for you."

"Like you cared for me today?" she scoffed, readjusting her arms to distract her from the conflicted feelings he was arousing in her.

"That was business, Karen," he countered, getting up to walk toward the window of his office.  "You better than anyone should understand that...after all didn't you leave me because our relationship was interfering with your job?"

"No...I left you because you have no discretion, Noah," she told him bluntly, not wasting time getting to the heart of the issue.  "You never have."

"You could have told me," he responded quietly, his back still turned to her.

"Told you?  Told you what, Noah?  That it broke my heart to hear that I wasn't enough for you?  That I had to overhear it from your unsuspecting staff members?  That I had to endure countless looks of pity from colleagues I respected and worked with?  No, Noah...you should have told me that this wasn't going to work.  Before I committed...before I said yes," she whispered, fighting back the tears she had left unshed all these years.

"I'm sorry, Karen...I never meant to hurt you," he explained in a low voice laced with regret, turning around to face her and feeling his heart sink at the pain in her eyes that she tried to hide from him even now.  "I hope you understand that."

"I didn't understand you then..." she confessed as she turned away to pull herself together but couldn't resist the large, comforting hand that found her shoulder now as she reached up to clasp it with her smaller one.  "But I think I do now."

"Bill is a lucky man to have you," Noah whispered in her ear as she smiled at this admission and squeezed the hand on her shoulder.

"I'm lucky to have found him," she replied before turning around to face him once more.  "You should pay us a visit.  We could take you to dinner."

"With my schedule, I doubt I'll be in California anytime soon. Rain check?" He asked her, knowing that he would never cash it in.

"Of course.  I'm sure you have a busy schedule," she accepted, knowing full well that he would never call her on it.  There was too much history between them...too much that had been left unsaid for them to ever resolve their relationship in a final way.  "I guess I'll see you when I return from L.A."

"I look forward to it," he informed her, returning to his usual gruff persona.  "And Karen?"

"Yes?" she responded, her blonde head turning around to address him.

"Have a safe trip."  And as her eyes twinkled at this unexpected wish of goodwill on his part, Noah Daniels was once again reminded of how much he had lost the day Karen Hayes had walked out of his life.

Oh my goodness!!! I LOVE it!

You write both of them so well! Your Noah is great and so is your Karen! Excellent characterization and I loved the dialogue!

If you write stuff like this I'm going to start shipping them for real!!!

Wow!!

You really think it's good? I wanted some more banter...and I repeated a few lines :) But I'm glad you liked it! Writing them definitely comes quite easily. I think next I'll work on...Five Things Karen Loved About Noah Daniels :)

Yay, you're writing more!!

I took caps from the two latest eps. It wasn't easy finding frames with both of them but neither of these have been manipulated! :D

You can clearly see he's checking out her ass in #1,3 and 4 - and she's checking out his in #2 (and he knows it!)

So glad you like them! Don't think many will appreciate them like we do though! LOL

Oh wow! It's great when you don't have to do anything to the cap :) I had fun manipulating the images of him and her. There are some good standalone shots that just beg for some icons of them together!

So what do you think of this one?

I was wondering what happened to you! Glad to know it was just because you were at sea. Unfortunately, I've been MIA too now that this game called Second Life has sucked me in :P

How did I miss this??? (I found the post on Technorati o.O)

OMG. I agree with [livejournal.com profile] im_a_yogi, of course. Great characterization and I can't wait to read your next fic!

Whaaaa...

Technorati? O.o

Anyways, I backdated it because it's not the best :P However, I promised im_a_yogi that I would post and had to put it somewhere where everyone wouldn't see it. You know how others are about our ship. *pets Noah/Karen :)*

Hmm should we go with Noren? or Karah? :D

Yeah.. I found some of my posts on Technorati, too. I was a bit annoyed/disturbed by that.

Hee. I like Karah, but Noren is more obvious.. I'll use Daniels/Karen, Karen/Daniels for now. I still can't call him NOAH.

Yeah that's REALLY strange...I went to the site and saw the same? What the freak?? O.o

Noren is more obvious but he's more of a Powers :D I hope we see him next season! How do you like this new Noah/Karen icon I made?
